4 Minutes: Kick Out the Tension—One author said, “Moods go away by kicking.” For several thousand dollars, you could hop on a plane and fly to Nanjing, China, and visit the Rising Sun Anger Release Bar that employs twenty people in protective gear. Patrons release anger as they kick, break glasses, throw dishes, and rant and rave.7

Don’t have the big bucks to fly overseas? Stateside there’s Sarah’s Smash Shack in San Diego, where for forty-five dollars, you can suit up in a helmet and padded duds and heave china plates against a wall.8 Hey, if you’ve got too much on your plate, just shatter the darn thing!

Obviously, these are over-the-top examples that make us laugh and wonder who in the world signs up for such events, but the principle behind exerting focused physical energy in order to release pent-up tension is solid. How do we do this when it comes to PMS?

Do eighty dog kicks. Kneel, knees on the floor, with your hands palm-down directly under your shoulders. Keep your back flat and parallel to the floor. Lift your right thigh high until your knee is parallel to the floor. “Punch” your foot out in a forceful kick and then return your leg to its starting position. Repeat forty times. (Yes, forty!) With each kick, feel the tension leave your body. The tightness in your right hip and thigh means you are blasting away fat and firming muscle, an added benefit. After you’ve completed forty kicks with your right leg, repeat the sequence with your left leg. When you’re done, roll over onto your back, take a deep cleansing breath, and exhale. Feelin’ better?

Kickbox. Purchase a kickboxing video and complete a heart-pounding four-minute workout. Imagine PMS as your adversary and give it the ol’ one-two punch.

kick the habit. Do you generally sit during TV commercials while watching your favorite show? Instead, stand up and do leg kicks, alternating between your left and right foot. To lower stress, kick high (just don’t kick over the lamp, because that will increase your stress).
